Can I Use the Gas Appliance if My Power is Out?

Can I use the gas appliance if my power is out? Most gas fireplaces are equipped to be used during a power outage. Fireplaces that use electronic ignition systems usually have a battery backup system. Keep in mind convection fans or blowers require 120 volts and do not work during a power outages.

Why does my gas fireplace have a bad odor? If you suspect your fireplace has a gas leak shut if off immediately and contact the fire department. If your fireplace leaks during operation, please turn off the flow of gas at the shut off valve and call us ASAP! Most fireplaces build up dust during the summer months and if they aren’t cleaned properly will give off a burning dust smell. Servicing your fireplace each summer will eliminate this problem.

How do I clean my glass? For safety reasons we highly recommend leaving this to a factory trained technician. If you feel confident doing this on your own, please have one of our technicians show you some safety tips while we are in your home.

My fan is noisy, what can I do? Most fireplace blowers have heavy duty components and are relatively quiet. If your fan has a loud humming noise, annoying vibration, or sounds like an unbalanced washing machine, it’s probably time to replace the fan with a new factory certified blower. Contact us with your make and model number and we will give you a quote to replace. LINK THIS TO How to identify the product that I have?

How do I light my pilot?

Can I adjust the flame height? Some fireplace valves have a variable flame adjustment. We recommend referring to your owners manual to locate the flame adjustment dial. If you aren’t sure, our factory certified technicians can further advise you during our in home service.

Can I reposition my logs? Gas logs are designed to sit in a predetermined pattern around the burner ports. Moving the logs could cause significant damage and sooting from flame impingement. So, NO!

Should I shut the pilot off in the summer? We leave this up to the individual homeowner. If you feel comfortable lighting your pilot, then turning it off during the off season will save you a little bit of gas consumption. If you are servicing your fireplace every year, we can advise you how to turn off the pilot after the winter season, and we can relight the pilot for you during your annual summer service.

Gas fireplace life expectancy – The normal life expectancy for a gas fireplace varies, but it’s been our experience that most fireplaces need to be replaced somewhere between 15-25 years.

Where do I find the model and serial number? – Refer to your owners manual. Most manufactures have a metal plate or stickers on the floor underneath the firebox.
